As adults we have feelings that our body naturally react to in different ways. We may wake up happy with every intention of having a good day, but instantly something may happen that may change our mood for the remainder of the day. We are able to deal with those instant changes because we have learned to understand our feelings, however for a two year old that is still struggling to put those emotional pieces together--it can be a frustrating period.
My work in Mood Swings deals directly with the different emotions a two year old exhibits on a daily basis. The subject for this project is my daughter; Sophia Alexa, who is beginning to develop cognitive skills and is still learning how to control her emotions. As a parent, I myself get frustrated with her limited attention span and her fluctuating emotional seesaw. However, I have learned to deal with my emotions and the emotional mood swings of others to control that frustration. Through photography I was able to study her mood swings and capture some moments where she exhibited her emotions.
A big inspiration for this project was Sally Mann who truly captured intimate moments of her immediate family. Although my work doesn't exhibit my daughters vulnerability, it does show a glimpse of her self-discovery.
