GAME:
A Conceptual Portraiture
In GAME, I photograph three things; a person, a place, and a thing. All three photographs link up with each other to tell a story that was personal to me. I chose to photograph a pastime that brought me back to my childhood; playing video games. The photograph of the person is my brother, the one of the place is our old room where we used to break night and play video games, and the thing photograph is a game controller. The final three photos are in B/W and are the ones I choose to present for this conceptual portraiture.
Although the photographs may look playful, this project deals more with anguish and a brotherly relationship that has gone astray. My brother and I don't communicate as much as we used to, and that's probably because we don't have many things in common anymore, unlike when we were kids when everything was a competition or conversations about anything. Maybe I just outgrew the video game phase while he kept it going... Doing this project brought me closer to my brother as we communicated about the old days.
The "place" shot brought back so many memories, good and bad. The "person" was fun to get because I kept telling him how to pose and where to move, and it didn't annoy him. The "thing" shot closes the story, showing that there used to be two players in this game, but now only one remains. It's a symbolic nudge to the past and how I have faded away from our favorite game.
